Executive Director/Producer Role at State Theatre Company

After a 42 year ride on the arts merry-go-round, our Executive Director and Producer Rob Brookman has decided it’s time to hop off – at least in terms of the kind of more-than-full-time role that he currently occupies. With Rob’s current contract with State Theatre Company coming up at the end of this year he has decided that he won’t be seeking further renewal. This is very much in accord with the succession planning that Rob and Geordie have discussed with the Company’s Board. While Rob won’t depart until early next year, the process of recruiting his successor will get underway shortly. Rob has committed to the Board that he will continue for as long as is required to ensure a seamless transition.

State Theatre Company of South Australia is the state’s flagship professional theatre company performing an annual season of classic and contemporary Australian and international theatre works at its main performance home – the Dunstan Playhouse. The Company is a major community and cultural resource for all South Australians and is vital to artistic life in the state.

State Theatre Company also plays an important role in the bigger picture of the Australian theatre scene, contributing touring productions and providing creative and career opportunities for artists and technical and administrative staff. We are committed to the commissioning, development and production of new works for the stage and to the development of South Australian artists through our artist development programs.

An initiative of Premier Don Dunstan in 1972, throughout our 40-year history the Company has played a pivotal role in the careers of many of Australia’s leading actors, writers and directors, attracting artists of the calibre of Colin Friels, Miriam Margolyes, Andrew Bovell, Xavier Samuel, Neil Armfield, Ruth Cracknell, Judy Davis, Gale Edwards, Mel Gibson, Garry McDonald, Geoffrey Rush, Jim Sharman, Hugo Weaving, Jacki Weaver and John Wood.

Each year the Company produces, presents, co-presents or tours around 12 productions with about 300 performances to audiences of over 100,000 people in South Australia, interstate and overseas. In 2014/15 the Company presented 168 performances within South Australia to an audience of 55,868 with a subscription base of over 3,000.

Additional activities of the Company include an extensive Education program, Subscriber Briefings, the Tangent series, creative developments, artists’ workshops and other activities.

With recent successes around the country, in New York and an international co-production in the UK, the Company is at an exciting stage in its development. A new home base for the Company at the Lion Arts Centre is one of a number of significant strategic developments also on foot over the coming triennium.

We are seeking an Executive Director/Producer who is an outstanding arts leader and manager with a vision and passion for developing theatre, building and nurturing a high-performing team and working with Artistic Director Geordie Brookman to inspire and engender confidence in the Company from audiences, the Board, external stakeholders, the artistic community and the wider community of Adelaide and South Australia.
