Celebrating 50 Years

State Theatre Company South Australia is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2022!

In 1972, the State Theatre Company of South Australia Act, a visionary initiative of former Premier Don Dunstan, was signed into law. It was a ground-breaking initiative of the Dunstan Government to create a world-class professional theatre-making company based in Adelaide and built off the legacy of South Australian Theatre Company dating back to 1965.

The legislation created the Company in its contemporary form at the same time as the construction of the Adelaide Festival Centre, where the Company became resident and began life in its ‘spiritual home’ at the (now) Dunstan Playhouse and Space theatres. In the 50 years since then, the Company has created shows, careers and creative eras that have defined South Australian and Australian culture.

Thank you to all the artists, audiences, staff and board members, creative partners, supporters and donors who have made the Company’s work possible across so many years.

We cannot be more excited for the next 50 years!
